Are you a Grower or Consumer of your Community?

It’s natural to be both a grower and a consumer at different times in your life. I see lot’s of people volunteering (growing) with their children’s activities, or for City Boards or Commissions or in their churches. I was pulled into volunteerism because of my affiliation with the Sachse Chamber of Commerce. When I first joined, the very dynamic executive asked me to be a part of the Hudson Middle School Campus Improvement team (CIT). This was almost 17 years ago and I have only let a couple of years pass without being on a CIT somewhere! I got so much more than I gave from participating. I learned sooooo much about Garland ISD that has helped me in my business and being a parent as well as being a better advocate for my children. The Chamber is so good about supporting the community needs as well as growing its members businesses.

Over the years, we have participated in food drives, community clean up days and for me the beast of my volunteering time has been the Sachse Fallfest. I absolutely love this community event! I love seeing all the things we do for the kids. I love that we help grow businesses. I appreciate what it has done for my own business. I feel like events like Fallfest build a stronger community.

2020 is the year that I think a lot of people would like to forget about however I witnessed something extraordinary with regards to the Fallfest Committee. More people joined the planning and execution than ever before. Brilliantly social distanced ideas emerged that are giving families an opportunity to get out and do things they haven’t been able to in months. It was decided that we would try to have something, some kind of event, running everyday in October to replace our one day Fallfest event. We kicked off with the Car Show Parade and it was a huge success. We will be ending with the Biggest of All Time Food Drives on the 31st with an insane goal of collecting 600,000 pounds of food. Good Lord willing, we are going to make that goal and bless hundreds if not thousands in our community that need a hand up right now. Please take a look at SachseFallfest.com and check out that amazing team of people that are building our community and making us all stronger.

If you are not currently a grower of our community in your schools, church or other groups, please consider participating with this group of people. The Fallfest Committee is like no other chamber committee…..it is made up of citizens and business members. They are brilliant and so dedicated to making Sachse a wonderful place to live. One last thing, I can say from experience that growing or volunteering always brings me so much more than I give.
